Whattya Think? 3rd Edition...
December 7, 2001

Whattya Think? As I am back in the flow, so now are my columns, so here goes with the 3rd version of Whattya Think?

49ersParadise asks: “Hey Zim, Whattya think about Jason Giambi signing with the Yankees?”

Well, you know that old saying “The rich get richer?” That would more than apply here. The Yanks gave up on Tino Martinez, and are now bringing in Giambi and his bat. Look for Giambi to excel in that lineup, but he may be a great candidate for my “Fat-Cat Theory”. What’s the “Fat-Cat Theory”, you ask? Well, quite simply, its when a superstar player signs a huge contract, and his performance slips down to a mediocre level afterward. Its quite uncanny actually, and it happens very often (e.g.: Randy Moss, Jake Plummer, too many NBA players to name)

Kim Maghoo asks: “What do you think of Ty Tryon making the PGA tour at 17?”

Its amazing; downright amazing. This kid has got some serious talent, but what impresses me is that he has the mental toughness to be able to survive “Q-School”. I just hope the kid can survive, because it is whole different ball game in the pros, and I think a 17yr old wide-eyed kid may just be intimidated by the likes of Duvall, Mickelson, Els, and Tiger. Let’s hope he is not just another one of those “flash in the pan” type of stories.

I still think it is amazing though, and I’ll tell you what, when I was 17, the last thing I had on my mind was trying to become a professional anything. The only thing I had on my mind was chicks, football, basketball and what I was doing on the weekend. I admire the kid to have the determination and discipline to get where he is this early.

Bill Derby asks: “Is Pittsburgh for real?”

I wasn’t sure until last weekend, when I saw them win when they were not at their best. That is when I was convinced; they are for real. But look out for the playoffs though, because Kordell may just cave under the pressure of a AFC Championship game.

Here is a side note about Pittsburgh. Did any of you know that Pittsburgh is the only city with at least three major sports teams who all wear the same colors? Isnt that a great tidbit of “Cliff Claven-esque” useless information? When I read that I was amazed, because I never really thought of that before. I think its kinda cool.

Dan Reiser asks: “Any big plans for Christmas, Zim?”

No Dan, not really, but thanks for asking.

I do have something to say about Christmas though. I would like to know why the songs “Frosty the Snowman” and “Jingle Bells” are considered strictly as Christmas songs? Seriously, if you think about the lyrics of them, they really have nothing to do with Christmas at all. Why can’t we sing these songs on January 12th? February 17th?

Does anyone else think this is weird? I dunno, maybe it’s just me…

Tyson Brochu asks: “This isn’t about sports, but I want to know what your favorite toy from the 80’s was.”

Tyson, that answer is simple; it was Transformers. Do you remember Transformers?

More than meets the eye?

Robots in disguise?

These toys were great, the transformed from cars or trucks to full motion robots, and they had great characters too. Is there a better good guy leader than Optimus Prime? I don’t think so. Those were great toys, and I think I am going to put some more thought into this and maybe make a list of my Top 5 Toys from the 80’s, so stay tuned.

Be sure to keep those questions coming people, and I will do my very best to answer them!

Until Next Time…
